Academic News
There is strong indication that all the four newly introduced programs in the University B.Sc Electronics, B.Sc. Agric. Extension, B.Sc. Irrigation Engineering and B.Sc. Industrial Chemistry verified recently by the Resource Verification team of the National Universities Commission have been approved.
The Vice-Chancellor Professor Attahiru M. Jega OFR stated this while declaring open a two day National Workshop on Preparing Proposal of Research Fund Seeking on Tuesday at 1000 seat Capacity Theatre, New Campus. He said the University is making positive wave in academic performance adding that its programs are recognized with quality standard.
Professor Jega who was the Chief host at the occasion said it was necessary to develop competence in research, saying that “One needs ability to prepare a

comprehensive research proposal to attract funding and grant”.
The Vice-Chancellor enjoined faculties and departments to produce all round scholars, adding that for students to pursue degree courses, they must be exposed to research activities.
Professor Jega further commended the University Research Committee for organizing the workshop, and expressed delight over the quality standard of paper presenters.
Earlier, in his address of welcome, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor Academic Professor Kabir Ahmed Bichi who is also the Chairman University Research Committee said for the University to increase research output, concerted effort of all the University scholars is needed, saying the target is to transform BUK into a full pledged institution of research.
DVC Academic reiterated that Bayero University would register with research Institution to strengthen the linkages and to further facilitate funding.
Professor Bichi added that it was the first workshop organized by the University on Proposal of Research funding.
Meanwhile, Ten papers were presented by scholars from Bayero University and others from outside. |

This is to inform members of the university community that Officials of Independent National Electoral Commission (I.N.E.C.) are issuing out permanent voters card.
Members are advised to come along with their temporary voters card to collect the permanent card.
The exercise started on Wednesday 12th March, 2008 and ends Wed-nesday 26th March, 2008 at Staff Pri-mary School, New Campus from 9:00am to 4:00pm daily

Appreciation
The Vice-Chancellor Professor Attahiru M. Hajiya Dukku who is an Alumnus of BUK commended the management as against N1,000.00. However, many Federal and State universities delivered their good will messages.
Meanwhile on the eve of the Convocation ceremony, Aminu Kano Living History Museum was opened at Mambayya House, in addition to the Chancellor’s Night.
Also in the University, a lecture titled “On the Question of New Nigeriana” was delivered by the Guest Speaker, former Minister of External Affairs, Professor Bolaji Akinyemi.
Professor Akinyemi said Nigeria was not the only nation state to be bedeviled by the artificiality of its creation. He said Nigeria was brought into existence by the British Authorities without consultation with pre-colonial nations that were living in what is now called Nigeria.
The Guest Speaker called for a de-ethnicisation of Nigerian Politics, saying there is a need for a constitutional amendment to allow for a two party system, citing reference to the 1990-1993 elections, which he said Nigeria for the first time had a party system that insulated it from the tendency to opt for primordial allegiances. He said there is need to fully democratize political values and system.
Professor Bolaji Akinyemi however advocated the need for strengthening the National Youth Service Corps,
Afribank, Alhaji Isa Zailani expressed delight over the way the ceremony was organized, and poised to make it an annual event.
Alhaji Zailani pledged the associations readiness to work in harmony with the University, and commended the management for its support and encouragement to the Alumni Association.
About Fourty-Nine members were awarded among whom were:

Meanwhile, Alhaji Isa Zailani donated 12 Seater Bus, 5 Computers and a set of Generator to the Development Office Bayero University, Kano.
Re-Appointment
The Vice-Chancellor Professor Attahiru M. Jega OFR has approved the re-appointment of Professor Muhammed Sani Abdulkadir as Head, Department of History for two year term with effect from October 8, 2007.

of the University for recording land mark achievement both in academic ranking and infrastructural development.
In his remark, the Vice-Chancellor Professor Attahiru M. Jega OFR said a total of 12,791 students graduated having been found worthy in character and in learning by the University Senate.
He added that twelve of the graduands got first class degrees.
“Out of the total number of graduands, 44 will graduate with PhDs, 1745 with Masters, 2520 with Postgraduate Diplomas, 5516 with first degrees while 2966 with Ordinary Diplomas,” he said.
The Vice-Chancellor commended the laudable gesture of both Federal and State governments to the University, adding that on the eve of the Convocation ceremony, Sokoto State Government donated 30 seater-coaster bus in addition to N5 million and N2 million received from Zamfara and Kano State governments respectively.
Professor Jega further stated that the University has improved the scholarship package to the students with highest C.G.P.A. to N20,000.00 which he noted would re-inforce the one-Nigeria syndrome.
Commenting on the lecture, the Chairman of the occasion, Alhaji Yusuf Maitama Sule Dan Masanin Kano described Professor Akinyemi as a role model. Alhaji Dan Masani recalled the days of political founding fathers in Nigeria, saying they did their best at ensuring national cohesion.
However, on the Convocation day, National steering Committee of Alumni Association under the auspices of Development Office organized Award Night in honour of its members who have demonstrated outstanding qualities in the growth and development of Bayero University and Nigeria at large.
Niger State Governor, Dr. Aliyu Mu’azu Babangida said it was a new dawn for the Alumni Association having organized the Award Night for the first time.
Dr. Babangida who is an Alumnus of BUK commended the Alumni for their meaningful contribution to the development of the University.
The governor urged the University to focus more on research and learning, and appealed to the University to continue its fight against rascalism.

The University Management has observed that there are several structures on both Campuses of the University that require proper naming for easy identification. To this effect a Committee has been constituted to accomplish this task.
The Committee has the following terms of reference:
(i) To identify all unnamed/ partially named University structures on the two campuses, and recommend on appropriate name for each one of them. (ii) To make any other useful recommendations that will assist in the implementation of this goal. The Committee hereby calls for memorandum in line with its terms reference. The memorandum should be addressed to the Secretary, Committee on naming of buildings. Establishment Division not later than 14th March, 2008.The date is to enable the Committee make a submission to the University Management. SPORTS STAFF, STUDENTS CLASH The staff and students of Bayero University will slog it out in a Friendly match encounter – on Sunday at the University’s foot ball field, Old Campus. The match which is expected to kick-off at 4:00p.m.is a litmus test for the students who are about to storm Ghana for the West African University Games to pitch their tent.
