The visitor of the University, President Umaru Yar’adua said the Federal Government has committed more than N8 billion to the Federal and State Universities for the research on Science and Technology.

President Yar’adua who was represented by the Minister of State for Education, Hajiya Aishatu Jibril Dukku reiterated that Federal Government would continue to improve the standard of tertiary education in the country.

Also in the University, a lecture titled “On the Question of New Nigeriana” was delivered by the Guest Speaker, former Minister of External Affairs, Professor Bolaji Akinyemi.

Professor Akinyemi said Nigeria was not the only nation state to be bedeviled by the artificiality of its creation. He said Nigeria was brought into existence by the British Authorities without consultation with pre-colonial nations that were living in what is now called Nigeria.

The Guest Speaker called for a de-ethnicisation of Nigerian Politics, saying there is a need for a constitutional amendment to allow for a two party system, citing reference to the 1990-1993 elections, which he said Nigeria for the first time had a party system that insulated it from the tendency to opt for primordial allegiances. He said there is need to fully democratize political values and system.

Professor Bolaji Akinyemi however advocated the need for strengthening the National Youth Service Corps,

Afribank, Alhaji Isa Zailani expressed delight over the way the ceremony was organized, and poised to make it an annual event.
